Skrei Cod Season has started with deliveries starting Tuesday 22^nd January and is due to end approximately April time.

First and foremost, the availability is dependent upon the weather. Meaning that if the weather is particularly bad, it can prevent the fisherman getting to the fishing grounds.

What is Skrei Cod?

Skrei means wanderer and is the given name for this stock of cod, due to the 1000km journey that is made each year. Skrei are larger than your usual coastal cod and differ in appearance from other cod with Skrei  having a longer more pointed shape, and lighter skin colour. It also migrates vast distances, spending its adolescence in the Barents Sea, whereas some coastal cod tend to live a more stationary existence.

Does Skrei taste the same as other cod?

The texture of Skrei differs from other cod, as it swims such long distances, it generally has a firmer consistency, with very white, flaky meat.

Virtually all parts of the Skrei can be eaten, with the roe, liver, tongue and jaw being edible, often adopting a tongue to tail ethos, when being used.

Is Skrei Sustainable?

Norway has gone to extensive lengths to ensure the longevity and quality of the Skrei Cod supply. Over 400million cod migrate each year, and only 10% qualify for Skrei branding. All Skrei is certified, with strict catching guidelines, ensuring a healthy population and an environmentally sound process – offering some of the most regulated fisheries in the world.

Due to such responsible fishing practices, requiring that the fish be at least five years old when caught, and due to heritage of fishing Skrei dating back to 875AD, it is fair to assume that Norway are well invested in the sustainability of this cod. It is a delicacy that can be placed in line with the likes of Wagyu beef, therefore making it one of the finest regional ingredients in the world.
